FAQ

Do the images have to be mine? Can I submit some of my friends?

The images must be taken by you, and submitted under your name for you to be considered in the competition. We want the credit to go to the photographers themselves.

Do I have to be a certain age to enter?

No, anyone can enter. In fact, we like to encourage young photographers. However, people under the age of 16 should get consent from their parent or guardian to take part.

What if someone uses a photograph that doesn't belong to them?

If you see an image that shouldn't be there, please click here. This will alert the judging panel and appropriate action will be taken.

What do you mean by 'appropriate action'?

If there is an issue then we'll take the image down until it gets resolved. No exceptions. Refer to the terms and conditions of entry.

Can I sell the photos that I've entered to others?

The 'LUMIX Life – Focus on Australia' project is designed to showcase unpublished (including commercially available) images by amateur LUMIX users and Pro Shooters. If you would like to sell your images, you must wait until 30 days after the book has been released (1 November 2010).

Does Panasonic own the copyright to my work?

The photographer retains copyright to their images. Panasonic reserves the right to display the images for the purpose of the project. Check the terms and conditions for more information.

Will I be paid?

No. This is a not-for-profit project. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to help fund Walk a While, an indigenous arts educational program.

However, all successful competition entrants will receive a copy of the 'Focus on Australia' publication.

What is Walk a While?

Over the past 6 years, Walk a While has positively impacted the lives of indigenous youth in remote Australian communities. Ken Duncan heads a team of artists who help them learn about the diversity of the photographic industry and the opportunities it can offer. It has given these children an opportunity to experience life outside their own small communities that they may otherwise never have had the chance to see.

What about obscene or otherwise disturbing images?

Hopefully they won't make it through the judging panel process but if you do see something upsetting then please let us know here.

How do you decide which images to pick?

The judging panel is selecting the images for inclusion in the book based on the following criteria:

  1. Artistic and literary merit of the image and caption combined;
  2. Technical competency of the image;
  3. Photographic quality of the image; and
  4. A photo taken in Australia adhering to the theme of "quintessential Aussie landscape and lifestyle".

Who is on the judging panel?

The judging panel consists of Ken Duncan and a selection of the LUMIX Life Pro shooters.

Why is this only in Australia?

The program originated in Australia and this year the project is about Australia. It is an opportunity for Australian LUMIX users to have their work showcased in a beautiful book, alongside renowned Australian Professional Photographers.

What should I take photos of?

It is absolutely your decision. You provide the inspiration and the images; we'll provide the pages in the book. You could choose to capture a dramatic Australian landscape, your favourite native animal or plant or even your backyard BBQ in Aussie suburbia – it's up to you.

What resolution do my images need to be?

To ensure your images look their best and are able to be published if chosen for inclusion in 'Focus on Australia', please make sure that your images are captured with the maximum resolution and the minimum compression for your camera. See images below showing how to do this on your LUMIX. Please note that the size of the image you submit could dictate the size of the image that appears in the book if selected.

Are stitches acceptable?

Stitched panoramas are also eligible but all images must be taken on LUMIX cameras. You may be asked to send the original images from the stitch for verification.

Why does it ask if the RAW file is available in the entry form?

Some LUMIX cameras have the ability to shoot a RAW image as well as a JPEG. RAW images are better suited for commercial printing. If your image is selected for inclusion in the book we would like to use the RAW image if available.

How do I know if my image is chosen?

If successful, you will be notified by email by 1 November, 2010.

Do I have to use a LUMIX camera for my submissions?

Yes. As the name suggests, the 'LUMIX Life - Focus on Australia' project features images captured by LUMIX cameras.

How do you know if I used a LUMIX camera or not?

A digital image captured by a LUMIX Camera contains meta-data that includes information about the model it was taken with.

Can I submit more than one entry?

You can submit as many entries as you want as long as the images are different. More than one entry may be selected for inclusion in the book.

When will the book go on sale?

The book will be on sale 1 November, 2010.

Where can I buy the book?

The book will be available in major book stores, selected photo stores and on the Ken Duncan website
